'Welcome to the NIC-Zoo' is an inspirational story that helps explain the purpose of a neonatal intensive care unit to a young child in a creative and colorful way. Featuring colorful illustrations of baby animals throughout their journey in the ‘NIC-ZOO’, this book can be used to help parents explain the NICU to an older sibling.  It can be scary for a young child waiting for their baby brother or sister to come home. They are just as affected by, and involved in this difficult process as any other family member. It teaches them that the NICU is a safe place to help babies grow and develop.

 I also encourage NICU parents to read this book to their littles ones while in the NICU and as they continue to grow once at home. It is a reminder of how strong they truly are and how far they have come! When writing this book, I put a lot of consideration into the parents' point of view as well. Being a NICU parent myself, I understand the overwhelming feelings of helplessness and fear. I hope this book can help by bringing NICU families a sense of comfort and support from every other family going through this journey alongside you.
